# FaviconDL FaviconDL (https://favicondl.com) is a free web tool and API for downloading website icons (favicons, Apple touch icons and web app manifest icons) from a URL. No account or API key is required. ## What it does Extracting a good favicon is often more involved than reading one `<link rel="icon">` tag: many sites only list a small `/favicon.ico` there, while larger icons sit in the web app manifest or at well-known paths. FaviconDL's extractor: 1. Loads the homepage with browser-like headers, following redirects (including www and bare domain), and reads every icon `<link>`: `icon`, `shortcut icon`, `apple-touch-icon(-precomposed)` and `mask-icon`, resolving relative and protocol-relative URLs. 2. Reads icons listed in the site's web app manifest (for example Android 192px/512px icons). 3. Tries the well-known paths `/favicon.ico` and `/apple-touch-icon.png`. 4. Downloads each candidate, checks the bytes are a real image and measures its pixel size. 5. Ranks the verified icons: full-colour SVG first, then the largest square raster image; single-colour mask icons rank lower. 6. Falls back to Google's public favicon service, then DuckDuckGo (`source: "google_s2"` or `"duckduckgo"`), only when nothing on the site works.
